Biography
An Algerian playwright writing in French, Fatima Gallaire was born in 1944 in a small Algerian town and studied literature in Algeria and cinema in Paris.
She has written over twenty plays, translated in more than ten languages and performed in countries all over the world, including the USA, Great Britain, Italy, Uzbekistan, and Morocco.
Works
Her main plays in English are:
- "Princesses", translated as "You have come back" by Jill McDougall, published in "Plays by Women" (F.Kourilsky editor)
- "Les Co-épouses", translated by T&C Shread as "House of Wives"
- "Témoignage contre un homme stérile", translated as "Madam Bertin's Testimony", published in "Monologues" (F. Kourilsky editor)
- "Des Cailloux pour la Soif", a radio play commissioned by BBC4, translated as "Pebbles for your Thirst"
She has also written many short stories, and novels for children.
Currently, Gallaire continues to write drama, with a tendency toward political and historical subjects such as the Algerian war, but occasionally writes on lighter subjects and creates total comedies.
She also recently began a familial saga meant to fill up several novels.
